Clip from my feature . . . movie . . . film, "Detective movie" (2006).
I've turned this into a bit of a tutorial on filmmaking. Some of it is specific, but some is a little abstract and philosophical and it will appear vague to some people, but to people like me it - I sincerely hope - will be high-level enough to be exactly what you need to hear. Er, read.
I can't remember the characters' full names. Mine is (Detective Lieutenant) Oda Ghent, or something close to that. My friends played the other ones, and they all played more than one character because nobody else's time schedules worked, and not because it's a strong but very low-budget, um, homage to Monty Python?
Anyway if I did the other guys' name-title-things (which I kind of stole from the Metal Gear Solid series' crediting the voice actors) are correct they are (I won't list in copyable text form their full or legal names) - in order of appearance:
Garrett: first, Steve; then, in part 2 of the sequence, Ronnie
Ryan: Tai
Eric: Steve
My mixed-but-basically-beagle Snoopy: (unknown)
Josh: Rebenga
None of us could memorize our dialog. Like, at all. We also kept making each other laugh.
I've said too much here. I'm sorry about that.
Please let me know what you think. It's kind of weird, kind of stupid. I dunno.
The chase sequence is entirely too long. I'm sorry about that. I almost want to go back and re-edit it and make it short and snappy. I certainly have the ability to. But not the will.
I can't remember the process or program(s) I used to compress this for - probably - YouTube, as opposed to MySpace or whatever, but I'm embarrassed of it. I'll have to re-upload and stuff and just pray that the music I used all gets past the YouTube analyzer algorithms or whatever. I'm certainly not worried about losing the 100 views this has garnered over like the last few years. Also: I have a big thing for audio. I don't like it to be shitty the way that apparently 90% of everybody else on YouTube does. But here, it's fairly bad. Another shortcoming.
"Don't sleep with a woman crazier than you" is a piece of advice, if I remember right, that Kris Kristofferson gave someone on a movie set, like during production. I can't remember who. I feel like it's David Goyer (oh, excuse me, David "S." Goyer).
Weapons that appear: Glock 20 (10mm Auto), Glock 17 (9mm Parabellum/Luger), Beretta M93R (9mm), and an approximation of an HK MP5SD3 (9mm) -- if you're into that sort of thing. I used to be way into it. If you've read any of the stuff I posted longer ago than about 2 years, I'm sorry for how amateur so much of it is and looks. I've learned since then. Cormac McCarthy's probably the only human writer who's actually good at that kinda thing - read him if you're into it at all like I was. He manages to mention a .270 Stevens rifle and its 150-grain bullet without sounding like a totally douchey condescending lecturer, but unlike for example a Lee Child, he sounds like he actually knows what firearms can do. And he doesn't have like a team of ghostwriters under him, like people who've served in the U.S. armed forces always seem to. Mark Bowden did a great job of describing soldiers in Black Hawk Down, too, though some of the weapon stuff sounds a little awkward - reporters. Shrug.
The aspect ratio is obviously wrong. I haven't figured out how to correct this, but I do plan to . . . eventually. It's 720x480 - basically widescreen for SD TVs. But that isn't actual widescreen, which is 16:9 / 1.78:1. I don't know if you can work with numbers, but if you can't, 720x480's aspect ratio is 1.5:1; fullscreen is 4:3 (1.3:1). Basically, it looks squished-in and shitty on YouTube. Dammit.
