The 2011 annual Harry Middleton Lectureship, Sponsored by the LBJ Foundation presents: Former President Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter spoke with LBJ Library Director Mark Updegrove. Major topics of the evening included analysis of current events in the Middle East and Jimmy Carter's pre- and post- presidency career. Part I of the discussion touches on Isreal, Egypt, and Russia. Jimmy Carter explains his relationship with Anwar El Sadat and explains who Omar Suleiman is and why he was chosen to be Vice President of Egypt during the January 2011 protests. Jimmy Carter also answered questions about the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as well as the implications of military rule in Egypt.
Harry Middleton - a great American - will always be associated with the greater society that can and will be built one day. Around the world, even when mention of the US caused unease and dismay from her friends in the international community, the name of Jimmy Carter reminded us of the best in American ethics and the greatness of America as a force for peace and justice. I have President Carter's autograph in my study and I think of American greatness every time I see his likeness there.
