For more Stories, Food News, and Cooking Fresh videos: http://cookingupastory.com As 25% of all Oregon farmland will be up for grabs over the next decade, the future of Oregons family farmers may hang in the balance. According to the latest 2007 Census of Agriculture, the average age of local farmers is 57.5 years, slightly older than the national average. Two central, and interrelated questions: How can we help insure that there are a next generation of family farmers in Oregon? How do we insure that there will be available (and affordable) land for them to farm?

  • infarmation lol

Most of the farm land in Indiana has been bought by corporate farmers. :-(

The reason why land is so high is because the land gets sold at auctions by family's that don't want to continue their legacy to corporate Ag company's. Ag company's have very deep pockets and can out bid any private buyer. Ag company's can also get credit a lot easier then an individual.

I disagree with the idea of leasing because paying for a lease would mean less profit.

  • That's a sad state of affairs... no wonder the average farming age keeps going up - no one can afford land!

Do you know of the Center for Rural Affairs? They have a page dedicated to new/young farmers, aptly called 'Beginning Farmers'. If interested, you can find it by going to cfra [dot] org and there's a link to the page in the top navigation bar. Or maybe pass the info along.

  • Thanks for the vid.....everyone definitely need to decrease the amount of industrial farming all over the world. Even if it's just growing a few vegetable so you don't buy them from a corporation.
