If it's not realistic, then it won't look good and it'll make a bad movie.
Besides, the third episode of the show has a scene where Aang finds the corpse of his teacher Monk Gyatso, surrounded by about a dozen dead fire nation soldiers.
If the show itself is considered kid-friendly and involves skeletons... why not the movie?

Yea they are pretty bad. The best he had was the Village and the reason it was bad was cause the monsters were the people themseleves its always a dumb twist.
