Basic stick care for First Coast Lax middle and elementary school players. The first key is THE STICK. Be sure you are using a GOOD stick, such as the deBeer NV3, or Impulse. Check with Coach McCord on where you can get set up with a great stick.

* Homework assignment for Week #1 is emailed

  • Stick size matters to most players. A few players who are smaller do not cut their stick. That works well for some people. It is tougher to protect a full length stick when you are smaller as you advance levels. Every part of the stick that is exposed, including the butt of the stick, is open for checking. I find smaller players with cut sticks tend to handle the ball the best and also play better with close grip situations inside the 8.

  • I would not recommend one generic handle size for a 7th grader. The length should be determined by the player's size and arm's length. For instance, a player who is in 7th grade and is 5'2" may use a stick that has 2 inches cut from the handle. 5'7" may not cut the stick at all. It depends on personal preference and ability to control the handle in dodges and skills.

  • The pocket is 100% legal and used on all levels of play. You just have to make sure the bottom of the stick does not bag out by tying them.

  • Can you further explain the "weave through" action? Thanks!

  • @schafdawg Weave the nylon up the head of the stick and pull the slack thru all hte way to the shooting strings.

  • If I bout stringing supplies and paid you could you string a head for me? Thanks, let me know.:)

  • I'm in 5th grade and I'm starting lacrosse in like the beginning of may and I just did the knife with the ball trick. I'll comment you back if the trick worked over night

  • @dskid28 for girls lacrosse the ref holds the stick parallel to the ground to check if they can see the ball above the side walls of the head

  • honestly cutting the shaft isnt too much help because a girl on my team has a cut stick and although she is short she cant reach for balls that are slightly high, an uncut stick is not bad for a middle schooler anything under maybe fifth grade or so may need to be cut

  • i saw another vid on girls lax pockets and that appariently the ref checks 2 make sure that they can feel the ball inside the mesh 2 see if te pocket is 2 deep is that true

  • @laxmaniax08 well im in 8th grade and i am just under 5'2" and i prefer the regular size without cutting it

  • you mention to cut stick for elementary school players, what length would recommend for 7th grader girls?
