PlusStudy: Moving Virus Research Could Be CostlyStudy: Moving Virus Research Could Be CostlyThe Associated PressAccording to a government study, it could be more costly to move a facility where scientists conduct research into deadly animal diseases than it would be to continue the research on the same isolated New York island. (June 20)[Notes:VO--RESEARCH AT PLUM ISLAND]=A FINAL DECISION ABOUT WHERE TO RELOCATE THIS HIGH SECURITY GOVERNMENT RESEARCH LAB ON PLUM ISLAND, NEW YORK ISN'T EXPECTED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. BUT A NEW GOVERNMENT STUDY CONCLUDES AN OUTBREAK OF FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE WOULD COST THE U.S. ECONOMY ABOUT A BILLION DOLLARS MORE IF IT OCCURED AT A FACILITY BUILT NEAR LIVESTOCK HERDS IN KANSAS OR TEXAS -- THAN IT WOULD BE IF IT HAPPENED AT THE CURRENT FACILITY ON PLUM ISLAND.THE U.S. IS LOOKING AT FIVE POSSIBLE LOCATIONS FOR THE NEW FACILITY --- ATHENS, GEORGIA.; MANHATTAN, KANSAS; BUTNER, NORTH CAROLINA; SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS; AND FLORA, MISSISSIPPI. A SIXTH ALTERNATIVE --- NOT LIKELY --- WOULD BE BUILDING A NEW RESEARCH LAB ON PLUM ISLAND. [Notes:VO--SHOT OF DR. BREEZE]DR. ROGER BREEZE IS A FORMER DIRECTOR AT THE CURRENT FACILITY. [Notes:SOT --DR. ROGER BREEZE/FORMER DIRECTOR] It seems a little odd to be thinking of relocating the lab in a region where there's a lot of agricultural animals. [Notes:VO--FILE OF 2001 HOOF AND MOUTH OUTBREAK]THE REPORT ALSO SAYS IF THE RESEARCH LAB WERE BUILT AND OPERATED ACCORDING TO GOVERNMENT SAFETY STANDARDS -- THE CHANCES OF SUCH AN OUTBREAK WOULD BE EXTREMELY LOW.BUT IT WARNS IF AN OUTBREAK DID OCCUR -- IT COULD POTENTIALLY BE MORE COSTLY THAN THE ONE IN GREAT BRITAIN SEVEN YEARS AGO -- WHERE LOSSES WERE ESTIMATED AT FIVE BILLION DOLLARS. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

Read Lab 257. Call legislators to prevent the new lab from moving near your family.

I live in butner, we're fighting this thing like nothing else. This town exploded from a population of around 5,000 10 years ago to almost 20,000 now, development has all but stopped now, houses left half completed, even a strip mall has been put on hold, all because of the NBAF. I Live ONLY 3/4 of a mile from where this lab would be located, think i'm worried?

I have a house like right there..
It's nice, but they should move it. It's scary. It's weird living near a disease place.
