The company, which hopes to drill an exploration oil well in the Beaufort Sea off the northern coast of Alaska in 2011, told media Oct. 5 that it's committed to engineering "an oil spill containment system" that's "designed to capture hydrocarbons at the source in the extremely unlikely event of a shallow water blowout."
"The containment system will remain staged in Alaska," Shell said in a statement, "and allow for rapid, on-site recovery for shallow offshore wells in extremely cold water."
