  • Is Lu Chunling using a dizi without a membrane, to imitate the sound of the xiao?

  • @dbadagna

i think so. his dizi is differ from normal one, NO MEMBRANCE. this can be clearly seen in 2:42.

  • Fantastic!

What year is the video from?

I guess they must be in their 70s and 80s.

  • the performance took place in Taipei / Taiwan on 12-6-1994.

  • It sounds as if Zhou Hao is using an Erquan erhu, as his lowest note seems to be an A below the erhu's normal low D.

Unfortunately, the pipa player, Ma Shenglong (马圣龙, 1933-2003) already passed away a few years ago.

  • I have their cassette recorded maybe about 30 years ago, with this same piece. How wonderful that you have shared their still-excellent playing at this venerable age for people around the world to learn from. Master Lu is certainly using a lot of ornamentation in this performance!

This is the piece that the great Chinese composer Nie Er arranged into "Wild Dance of the Golden Snake" (Jin She Kuang Wu, 金蛇狂舞).
