Two weeks after the previous move, we're at it again! This time we moved Greg and his family four blocks to their new home. And while we didn't have far to go, this time the entire move was done by pedal power!

And among the various things we had to move were Greg's musical instruments. Most were easy to do, and one definitely added some fun to the day. This beast is called a helicon, and it's a predecessor of the better-known sousaphone. You put your head through the coiled tubing and hang it on a shoulder for marching purposes. I thought it wuld be a fab idea to do this while riding the cargo trike!

Now, I'm a drummer and woodwind player, and I only have enough experience with low brass instruments to embarass myself. But hey, I'm already moving furniture whilst riding a slightly odd vehicle, so having a large horn added to the mix is only a minor factor. ;)

As always, the video was captured on my litle Canon camera, this time wielded by jasonM while he was stoking Richard's tandem trike (which was using its overhead rack and also towing the big trailer). And that is Richard's son Nico in the cargo box.

  • Just lovely! This made my day!

One advantage the helicon has over the sousaphone, is that it retains the bell profile (and thus the sound quality) of the upright (concert) tuba.

The two sharp bends just before the bell that makes a sousaphone a sousaphone forces it to have a much more narrow bell profile - like a piccolo trumpet bell, actually - which gives it a more "brassy", less "tuba-ish" sound.
