The Middle/Lower states do not experience thermal bridging 2the same extent of draw &time that the upper states do.In New England heating season runs 6 months &in the morning hours when dew is seen on the side of wood sided home the studs dry first.Creates vertical/horizontal lines clearly visible 2eye &this clear example-thermal bridging. The physics of temperatures is hot goes to cold &thus the heat in home is drawn through studs since this is the lowest R value in the wall and the cold spot.

License #CAN06347, Building Performance Analyst. I am the best and the brightest in the building science community. What makes me that is that I am one of the few that builds. Most regurgitate what they read. Our customers typically pay 6% interest on a mortgage.......the building science community needs to focus on upgrades that perform better than 6% or the customer loses money to a bank vs. energy company. If they pay cash for a house, it still has to outperform a 3% investment.
Insulated vinyl siding? Thats what I want, plastic siding to bring down my bills. You are kind of wrong, wood is not a conductor, the studs have an R-value, the sheating has an R-value,, I think they even assign one to drywall. They usually require R13 walls R-19floor R-30/38 ceiling. Tell me the least important place to worry about insulation? THE WALLS!

@HomeEnergyNow You are correct that most materials in a wall assembly get credit for a little R-value. It is usually very low, and therefore they are not included as insulation materials in the prescriptive measures of the IECC or Energy Star. The Department of Energy also stresses the importance of reducing thermal bridging with exterior wall insulation.

@InsulatedSiding If you knew how to do a btu load calculation, and the price difference for certain materials, than you know as much as IECC or Energy Star or DOE. If your home is built to todays standards, there is VERY little to be saved by eliminating thermal bridging. Therefore spending any time or money on it is wasting time or money. Homes need to get away from plastics, not the other way around.

@HomeEnergyNow We're simply promoting a complete building thermal envelope, along with the rest of the home performance industry and the best and brightest of the building science community. Many of these professionals include exterior wall insulation in their recommendations. Fortunately, there are siding insulation systems available for all types of cladding, making it possible for homeowners to have both the aesthetics and the energy-efficiency they demand.
