This is the first draft of a video that is a work in progress. I explore three of my research interests that are comprise my tenative dissertation project: Christian Education, the Great Books of the Western World, and Video games. Admittedly, the video games are mentioned only tangentially in this video, but they may yet play a central role in my research.

Please, provide me feedback and suggestions for improvements. It's a wok in progress that I'd eventually like to include in a professional portfolio (if I can make it good enough).

Thanks.

  • all this video is, is words and people breaking glass...

  • @socreisfunny -- it's a metaphor. That and I was learning. If I were doing it over, I would perhaps use fewer words, but words are the primary means of conveying an argument. (Try to make an argument using pictures or videos. It _might_ be possible. But I could make the same argument much more clearly and concisely using words.) The breaking glass provides a metaphorical backdrop for my words. It's an image to carry the message on an another channel and to enhance the power of the words.

  • It is a good video, no doubt. I do however have a problem with the idea that in today's corrupt society of corporate manipulation - the only answer is Faith in God.

  • Do keep in mind that the video was part of a larger presentation. In "The University of Utopia," Hutchins makes the case that only one of two things can unify knowledge--theology or metaphysics--because they are trans-disciplinary. In other words, something within a discipline (e.g., science or history) cannot be used to unify across multiple disciplines. Ultimately, I appeal to the Christian God because I believe He provides the most logically consistent answer to the ultimate questions.

  • I liked this video, coming from a guy who has read on the subject of educational perennialism and who is planning to apply to Shimer College. I would say try to find a quote from the "Choosing the Right College 2008 edition" college guide.

This series, which is published by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI), takes a politically conservative stance on the issue of post-secondary education and the liberal arts. A quote from the CTRC series could be useful in this video.

  • I love ISI.

Thanks for the suggestion. If you're interested in intellectually conservative scholarship, you should also check out the National Association of Scholars.

  • It is true, some good things come out of religion, but why is it assumed that if a man does not believe in God, but believes in himself, is not as legitimate as the one that does?

  • I am a family man. I am an individual, but I believe that individualism of today's society has only got us to be like knowledge...shattered! In truth, those in power have got what they aimed for. It is easier to control a thousand lost individual souls, than a group of individuals who are aware of what needs to be done...through knowledge or whatever more.

  • Well done!

  • Great video, thanks for putting this together.

You will also enjoy A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille.

  • These books are useful:

"The Trivium: The Liberal Arts of Logic, Grammar, and Rhetoric" by Sister Miriam Joseph Rauh, "How to Read a Book" by Mortimer Adler, and "The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home" by Susan Wise Bauer. Check out Amazon for even more books.

Sorry for the info-overload, but I am very interested in this subject. Cheers!

  • Also, you may want to look "Classical education movement" on Wikipedia. The CEM article not only talks about post-secondary education, but secondary education and even homeschooling as well.
