http://ezvideoguy.com/fieldtest mics for outdoor video make all the difference. Here I show 2 inexpensive mics that I use regularly in the real world.

My recommendation is that you start with the type that will fit you needs best but add another to cover all the bases.

More info and links are in the blog article linked above.

Recorded in Oct 2011 at Atlanta's city limits on Ponce De Leon. In other test we'll spend more time with the Zoom H2.

  • How did you wind up synching the Zoom audio with the Zi8 video. i know very little about this- did you use software or some other method?

  • @shawnmetts Ill be showing this someday soon so please subscribe to be notified. I usually use Sony Vegas Movie Studio as my editor and I add the 2 pieces together on the timeline - I clap my hands to 'mark' the files like the movie clapper that's been used for 100 years ;-) Thanks for the good question.

  • Hi there. Good video demonstration.

I have the ATR 6550 mic and the zoom H2. No matter what I try all I get is noise and a very low level. I have tried other mics with the H2 and had OK results, just not with the 6550. Any suggestions?

  • @thecollectorfilm2011 Id replace the AA battery and maybe check the mic settings in the H2 menu, referring to the manual.. does the mic work well when connect to other devices? I'm no expert FWIW.. If I find something isnt Ez I tend to replace it with something else

  • V ery nicely done. The Viewers, of course, want to know how you sync'ed your voice with the video when you were using a separate audio device.

  • @reibroker Next video - I will sow how I do this, and if I can do it it must be Ez ;-)

  • If you record audio into the zoom and video in the camcorder does that mean you have to sync them both up later in a software editor? I guess it probably does. The audio sounds much better using the zoom.

  • Very well done Randy, even I could follow you which is saying a lot. I like the idea of a lavalier mic but without a windscreen it seemed to pick up more noise from around you. Still searching for a solution to go with my Zi8. Just subscribed to your channel.

  • Thanks Randy for sharing examples of different audio mics that are budget friendly and provide good sound quality

  • Thank you, Randy. I use Mike Stewart's recommendation of the AT Pro 24 Stereo Microphone and also have the AT Pro88W wireless as well. An example is YTube video uCDHL03b0FA .

  • If you are interested in my testing, search YouTube for "jandbrare, zi8"

  • I, too, am interested in knowing how you sync. I've an old Olympus VN-490PC dig recorder which I've considered using in lieu of the Zi8 or Playsport (I have both). I've done considerable testing of mics with the Zi8. Still haven't found a way to record musical performances much, if any, better than with the Zi8 internal.

    Thanks for the testing.
