Hi I'm back folks...needed a break ! BUT lets now get back to the studio or well not mine in this clip but this one just up the road.....enjoy !
Alfareria Santiago Mellat S.C here in Traiguera about half an hours drive from my studio. It would seem that here in Spain handmade pots of this type are in decline and potteries such as this one are closing up - thats a real shame as they have a long tradition going back. SL
We run workshops ...one starting on Monday 24th ,still a place vacant, if anyone is interested ? SL

  • Hey Simon! I've wondered for quite a while...I am Colombian-American...and when I try to explain to my family and what not, what I do...there are some 'ceramic' terms that Im not sure how to say in Spanish....Can you help? how do you say, potter's wheel? glaze? slip?

  • hi there ..potters wheel = torno, glaze = esmalte ,slip = engobe... hope that helps !! SL

  • yes I agree with that comment ! SL

  • I see you're a busy man, but I do have a quick question if you have a chance to answer it. Why are potters, like this one featured, in decline? Is it because they cannot compete with cheaper imports, or is handmade pottery being replaced by cheap, mass produced products sold in large retail stores? Is there an entirely different reason? I'm quite curious as I'm planning to have a go at ceramics when I finish my home, (I've become a bit bored with only woodworking and desire another medium)

  • hi - I was refering to here in Spain.Ceramics will always have am appreciation from people but they are not used to paying money for them...as an object to use ceramic has much competition these days. Here ,as an art form it has little recognition except in the way out modern sculptural pieces.i could write more.!..SL
