Ed Roberts Campus—Building Community
Architects: Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects (http://www.lmsarch.com)
Tim Griffith - Photographer / Director (http://www.timgriffith.com)

The Ed Roberts Campus is the first building of its kind in the nation—a non-profit community center serving and celebrating the Independent Living / Disabled Rights Movement. Located at a regional public transit hub in Berkeley, California and integrating advanced strategies of Universal Design and Sustainable Design, the project welcomes and supports people of all abilities.

Commemorating the life and work of Edward V. Roberts, an early leader in the independent living movement of persons with disabilities, it has become the foremost disability rights service, advocacy, education, training, and policy center in the world.

  • I'll share with our group of discussion about inclusion and accessibility at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Fantastic the Ed Roberts Campus. Hope we can get there.

  • Shared this video with the director of National Disability Services in Chile... one could hope ...

  • I feel a great sense of pride to be working with colleagues at WID and with colleagues of other agencies in this historic and world class center. This video was extremely well made and shares the vision and spirit of renewal, community and strength.

  • Agree! Beautiful. This so much reminds me of the Guggenheim Museum in NYC - was that accessible too?

As an advocate for all with hearing loss and deafness, we hope this can be mentioned in another film too - e.g. wireless for good access to speech to text (real time on site or remotely; captioning inclusion for all events; etc.

    cheers to your center!

  • Brilliant and beautiful video! We love our space in the Ed Roberts Campus. Can we ask what camera this video was shot with ?

  • I've been looking forward for a long time to seeing the Ed Roberts Campus. I wasn't able to find out when it would or if it was completed. I think the video give a good tour. I'm pleased it's finally come to pass and the different organizations can be in one place now.

Aesthetically I don't find the design pleasing but during a visit I might find the access very nice. I was glad to see an elevator - that ramp looks fun coming down but not up with a manual chair.

    Thanks for the video.
