I've seen this done with many belugas. They love it- it's a game to them to bounce up and down in the water. In all the situations I've seen (personally, 2 feet from the whale), they have every opportunity to leave the area and not participate. This was also while there was no food or primary reinforcement involved. They never expected food or a "treat"...they were there because they enjoyed the interaction and bouncing

That Beluga Whale is Ferdinand. He cames from Germany (Zoo Duisburg), where he lived from 1975 till 2004 before he moved to San Diego and yes, he loves that.
