NetworkNewsToday: 23 September 2009 - UNTV: Addressing the UN General Assembly, US President Barack Obama says that those who used to "chastise" America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world's problems alone. "We have sought - in word and deed- a new era of engagement in the world."

United States President Barack Obama today (23 September) called on the world to redouble its efforts to ensure that the United Nations is central to efforts to advance the common interests of people around the globe.

Speaking in New York on the opening day of the Assemblys annual General Debate, Obama said the magnitude of the challenges facing the world meant it was critical for countries to act together and called for a new era of engagement with the world.

The US president said the importance of cooperation among States was illustrated by numerous challenges today, including efforts to promote non-proliferation and disarmament, the fight against climate change, the Middle East conflict and the struggle to recover from the global economic crisis.

He said that the governments of Iran and North Korea must abide by international standards and must be held accountable if they dont live up to their responsibilities.

Regarding the stalemate in the Middle East he said that the goal of two states living side by side in peace and security is clear, including a Palestine state that realizes the potential of the Palestinian people.

Obama also spoke of international efforts to chart a course for economic growth that is balanced and sustained by setting new rules so that we put an end to the greed, excess and abuse that led us into disaster.

The US President acknowledged that he took office earlier this year at a time when there was much skepticism and distrust about the United States and its intentions and stressed that it falls to the current generation to work together to make the most of the UN.
