Paul demonstrates the Watts Up Pro Electrical Meter. They test the effect of using blackle.com as opposed to Google.com. Plug any standard electric appliance into a Watts up?™, and the electricity meter will quickly display the wattage and the electrical usage cost of the appliance. • Wow! A difference of 1W. The power supply in the computer is drawing a significant more amount of power. I guess you could argue that if you turn the sound down on your speakers you'll be using less power and therefore "save the planet". I probably already wasted more power than that just by downloading this video and then typing this response back. Hehehe.

  • so blackle doesnt really save me energy....

  • This is very helpful. :)

    Thank you very much <3

  • someone should do this on a really big scale, and very thoroughly, every brand of screen, every sort of computer, laptop, pda and let's see how much it would differate on a big scale.

  • Wow thanks a Lot, I was resaerching the same thing, Actually I wanted to make my website to have a black background, now im having second thoughts. It would be very nice to have a test for different kinds of monitors, LED LCD, CRT and Plasma

    Greettings from Peru

  • The difference is miniscule....unless you take into account your optometrist bill from the increased eye strain cause by reading a black screen with white letters.

  • I obviously exaggerated a little bit, but in reality CRT isn't widely used anymore. Not that it's out of fashion, it's simply just outdated technology.

  • no it doesnt even work with old screens.

  • Not in an additive color system.

  • Tossing a working CRT to save line power is a waste of the power it took to build, transport and dispose of the CRT.

It only makes sense in a power restricted environment like a remote researh station, boat and the like - not a typical office or home.

  • 'and nobody uses CRTs anymore'

    Yes we do.

I won't toss an $1800 monitor -just- because it's out of fashion, or uses more power...

And the scanning raygun in a CRT scans the screen full time with multiple colors it doesn't use more or less power based om what is displayed.
