Open House was a great success! We had lots of people come visit with the animal residents of World Bird Sanctuary. For our stage show this year we did a program like none we've ever done before! Our Animals of North America presentation showcased a variety of unique creatures from the familiar to the strange. There are few animals stranger than the mysterious alligator snapping turtle! Here we meet little Angel, one of our special guests from Riverside Reptile Ranch in Stanton, Mo.

  • actually your wrong your most likely thinking about a common snapping turtle which can be seen in fast flowing rivers but if you crack open any book about alligator snapping turtles it will tell you that they are found in deep water

  • Actually, completely wrong. True, they're not in Farm ponds but you will find them in really fast flowing rivers in the hills and mountains of Arkansas and Southern Missouri and you'll also find them in very small creeks in the south, usually choosing the creek bends and pools as a primary residence, but there is nothing about their natural history that requires DEEP LARGE WATER. Actually the larger the water, the less you will find do to over harvesting, over fishing of the turtle.

  • And that's just a wee baby.
