These are photos from the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans taken on January 8, 2011, five years, four months and ten days after the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. There are occasional homes that have been rebuilt but, for the most part, this area remains unpopulated and is filled with shells of homes damaged by the flood waters.

  • People wonder if the gov't would let the levees break on purpose. How about they let the levees go knowing that the area could potentially yield millions more in tax revenue, tourist revenues, casino revenues than the folks who formerly lived there. Look who'd buying up the region if you doubt me. Look what's going to happen in 5-7 years. Eminent domain brought to you by the hand of gawd!

  • ok, that music is horrific. But thank you for the update in the photos of how things really are.

  • @uptownla5o4 Im not saying that k-stone is correct but there have been time where levees have been intentionally breached so that some of the water can run off to prevent a complete destruction. It could be that this was done and it got out of hand. Again, im not saying thats what did happen but I am saying that it has in fact happened before for example in 1927 at Caernarvon, Louisiana they used dynamite to flood st bernard parish.

  • @kstone0550 why would the federal government destroy the levees? they had to spend billions of dollars on relief and reconstruction and clean up and other things. it makes no since..the government couldn't get any benefit from destroying a city..and when people say ignorant things it just makes me wonder how people could think that..its so stupid

  • I think they shld abandon the area maybe, since it is so prone 2 flooding y not have lower ninth ward lake otherwise dredge sand and mud somewhere else and level up the ground

  • Thumbs up if you where lokking for NINTHWARD SKIING!

  • i live here and i believe they broke the levee and destroyed this area as well. and everyone says y do we live here? here is home and anywhere else u go there will b a differnt natural disaster that happens in that geographical area. like earthquakes in california. if everyone ran from natural disaster where the fuck would we all stay?

  • @123poopypant I know some, living next door to me in MO. Happy to be here....

  • Who the heck wants to go live in a place, where the water can come at the whim of a hurricane?

  • I am appalled that the people dont understand that people want to be bak in their own homes & neighborhoods(smh) Its almost like they are sayn F**k da low-income families! This is the richest country in da world & they cant even help their own people but they can go overseas & assist other countries well-being
