Key points in this section are Civil Rights, Gay marriage and schools, Proposition 8. The most controversial topics on Prop 8. I strongly suggest everyone watches this and learns the facts. If you have limited time, I suggest the 15 mins of PART 1 and PART 2 the most.

Who Opposes Prop 8?
Newspapers:

Los Angeles Times
Its a drastic step to strip people of rights.

The San Diego Union Tribune
Prop 8[singles] out a particular group for discrimination, a move that offends many Californians sense of fairness.

Orange County Register
Revoking same-sex couples right to marry doesnt belong in the state constitution. We recommend a no vote on Prop 8.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise
There is no compelling public policy reason to reverse that arrangement, and voters should say no to Prop. 8.

Contra Costa Times
Reject Proposition 8. We strongly urge voters to carefully consider the harm Prop. 8 would do not just to gays, but to all Californians, and reject the initiative.

The Sacramento Bee
Californians should reject the call to amend the state constitution to exclude some people from marriage. That would be a black mark on the constitution, just as past exclusionary acts remain a stain on Californias history.

The San Francisco Chronicle
Californians should reject Proposition 8.

The Napa Valley Register
Vote no on Proposition 8. In our view, Proposition 8 is a misguided and unconstitutional proposal. We urge voters to reject Proposition 8.

The San Jose Mercury News
Mercury News recommendations:
Proposition 8 — End right to gay marriage: No

The Palm Springs Desert Sun
Reject the rejection of same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage does not diminish marriage between a man and a woman. Its a basic civil right that everyone regardless of gender should have. The time has come. Therefore, we oppose Proposition 8.

The New York Times
California voters will have a chance in November to protect the rights of gay men and women, and to preserve the states Constitution. They should vote against Proposition 8, which seeks to amend that Constitution to prevent people of the same sex from marrying.
Redding-Record Searchlight

Same-sex vows cause no harm to our families. The reasons given for Proposition 8 just dont stand up to scrutiny.

La Prensa San Diego
We believe that if two people are in love and they want to get married, we as a State should not legislate against the happiness of these people. We Urge a No Vote on Prop. 8.

Ventura County Star
Editorial: Proposition 8 denies rights. No vote stands for fairness.

The Tracy Press
We dont like taking away civil rights, which is why we recommend a no vote on Proposition 8.

Santa Cruz Sentinel
Even people with reservations about same-sex marriage should consider the import of voting against a legal right. We support the right under California law for gays and lesbians to marry. Vote no on Proposition 8.

The San Francisco Bay Guardian
Proposition 8: Ban on same-sex marriage.
NO, NO, NO

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune
Vote no on Prop. 8.

La Opinión
Una propuesta innecesaria. Estamos con el NO a la Proposición 8.

Daily Iowan
California should vote No. Denying the rights of same-sex couples to marry is ultimately denying that they are people who are worthy of the same dignity and respect as everyone else.

LA Daily News
Reject Proposition 8. California is better than that.

Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Marriage is a fundamental right that belongs to same-sex couples just as it belongs to opposite-sex couples. The Press Democrat recommends a no vote on Proposition 8.

The Bakersfield Californian
Californians need to move beyond the divisiveness that Prop. 8 has engendered and embrace tolerance and reconciliation. Live and let live.

The Daily Bruin
"It is contradictory and hypocritical to stand as an American and talk about the foundation of equality, tolerance and fairness of the nation, and then to turn our backs on other citizens who are equally entitled."

Asian Week
"Our California Constitution guarantees the same freedoms and rights to everyone—no one group should be singled out or treated differently."

LA Downtown News
"Gays and lesbians deserve the same right to marriage that the rest of Californians enjoy. Vote no on Proposition 8."

The Fresno Bee
"The state constitution shouldnt be used to turn some people into second-class citizens. Vote no on Proposition 8."

San Francisco Business Times
Its wrong to deprive certain citizens of basic rights.

  • Everyone wants to keep arguing but makes it a church issue I am tired of talking about it with them. Please make it a constitutional issue because that is what it is.

I challenge you to open perspectives, very intriguing movie called "Almost Normal" about a gay guy in our society where society is conflicting about gays. He falls into a parallel universe where everyone was gays and he becomes straight in this parallel universe. after you watch this movie here is my challenge....next post

  • Understand this, we are talking about Marriage not weddings. The church has nothing to do with a marriage license. If they choose not to conduct a wedding that is a separate matter. Do your own research on marriage under federal rights and state rights, and what transfers with gay civil unions and what does not. Maybe then you will understand this fight more. Please separate anything you feel from a religious perspective and US citizen perspective. do that and we will chat more.

  • "How do you explain all the Federal benefits that civil unions don't provide but marriages do?"

i was speaking more from a state point of view but tell me about the federal benefits aspect.

    "also quit changing topics"

i apologize, i a not meaning to change the subject. how did i change it?

  • i wont be, and though i dont know you i can honestly say i love you deeply as a person - i definitely dont agree with your life style if you are gay, but i respect that you want to live your life. i hope you stay safe. but anyhow, i hope you can see my point of view also: i feel very disrespected and that my moral values are in danger... thats really the whole gist of my side

  • How do you explain all the Federal benefits that civil unions don't provide but marriages do?

Yeah learn your facts before you challenge a new question, and also quit changing topics just because I argue back a point on one topic.

  • half truths? i see why you want to have gay marriage, but i also see why you dont need it to have the same rights - you already do. you are telling half truths

  • There is more to that story and we both know it, Quit telling half truths thats what I really dislike about many yes supporter is they cant tell the entire story on anything because they know if they do they are wrong. Research from non-bias news(non conservative and non liberal) Learn the whole story and then come back.

  • it's only as self-destructive as people allow it to be. i choose not to be. i was raised with i hope, some morals and ethics.and i'll say this to you...thank you for not being the extremely nasty person some people have been towards me.

  • im not ignorant about it, though i wish sometimes i was. if anything you are ignorant in understand how self destructive the gay life style is.

  • that isnt equality because then the other side will suffer. if they were 'fair' and 'equal' they would respect those who want to live a moral life and realize that what they have is already fair even though its not called marriage. they have the same rights.
