Durante el siglo XVIII, los koma empezaron una larga marcha desde la zona del lago Chad hasta llegar al valle de Faro. Los kanuri del Imperio Kanem Bornu los bautizaron con el nombre de pueblo perdido por su larga diáspora en busca de nuevas tierras donde asentarse.
Con la invasión peul del siglo XIX, muchos koma se refugiaron en los escarpados montes Alantika donde construyeron poblados y cultivaron las laderas. Actualmente, unos 30.000 koma siguen habitando en este aislado macizo saheliano en la frontera de Camerún con Nigeria, aferrados a su forma de vida tradicional que gira en torno a los ciclos agrícolas.
