Cork's €7.5 million astronomical observatory and interactive visitors' centre at the city's landmark Blackrock Castle was inaugurated on November 19, 2007.
The Elizabethan Castle - established four hundred years ago on the banks of the River Lee to protect against North African pirates - now houses Ireland's most up-to-date astronomical research facility and a team of scientists working on new technologies for searching for planets around distant stars.
As part of the celebrations, Blackrock Castle Observatory compiled video footage from outer space to honour astronaut Dan Tani - who is married to Cork woman Jane Egan and who is currently living and working aboard the International Space Station. Dan Tani's mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Larry Egan, were present at the castle for the event.
This clip, from an earlier flight, features Kinsale legend Ollie O'Regan singing a song he wrote specially for Kinsale's favourite astronaut.
NOTE: the video is from a more recent flight.
