The Sumba Foundation is helping over 20,000 people in more than 147 villages on the remote island of Sumba, Indonesia by providing clean water, building and operating healthcare clinics, repairing and supplying schools, bringing in doctors and nurses, helping to eradicate malaria and malnutrition while creating better lives and opportunities. This video shows the progress this wonderful organization is making.

Since 2001, when The Sumba Foundation was established by Claude Graves and Sean Downs, water, health, education and economic projects now cover a 110 square kilometer area in West Sumba. Some key highlights of our work to date include:

* Healthcare: Five health clinics have been built and are staffed by the Foundation providing quality healthcare treatment to people throughout the island. Nearly 200 patients have received life-changing surgery. Additionally, 248 cataract eye surgeries have been performed in the last two years.

* Malaria Control: Malaria infection rates have been reduced by 85 percent through an aggressive mosquito netting program in the villages, better and earlier diagnosis and treatment. Infant and child mortality rates have dropped significantly.

* Opened the Sumba Foundation Malaria Microscopy Training Center for teaching and certification. Over 100 health workers have graduated, who will treat and diagnose more than 300,000 patients over the next year.

* Clean Water Programs: More than 40 water wells and 141 water stations constructed to bring clean water to more than 12,000 Sumbanese.

* Education: Built or renovated 13 primary schools supplied with water, toilets, tables, chairs, library books and supplies. Today, over 3,200 children receive education in Foundation run schools, and also get supplemental education in hygiene and nutrition. Our scholarship programs teach students to advance to career opportunities to work in Foundation-built and operated healthcare clinics.

There is still much to be done, but the solutions to the needs of the people of Sumba are elementary. Helping the people help themselves is the cornerstone for the success of our projects. In so doing, we are confident that we are building the foundation for a better way of life, while carefully preserving the traditions and unspoiled essence that makes Sumba so remarkable.
