What a tremendously dynamic performance, despite fluffs, really capturing the spirit of this movement, and at the right speed. Very much a "live" sound, with mics placed closer to the strings than one would expect, giving great presence.
I love Bruckner scherzos -- most people rave about the adagios -- but the driving dynamic quality of the scherzos make him seem so modern at times. The scherzo of the 9th is astounding, and looks forward to Stravinsky and Prokofiev.

Unlucky first horn in the Etwas langsamer...

Back in about 1970, I heard Zubin Mehta and the L.A. Philharmonic play this symphony at my university. Between the second and third movements, they took a lengthy intermission. I can't recommend the practice.

I had never heard of Herbert Blomstedt till I found this channel. The clarity of his conducting and his understanding of Bruckner are absolutely astonishing. I don't think I've ever heard anyone cope with both the lightness and the weight of Bruckner like this. A definite rival to my favourite Bruckner conductor, Gunter Wand.

This is my favourite Bruckner piece, although to be honest,i`ve not heard a great deal of Bruckners music.

This is so great! What a great orchestra, conductor and what a fantastic French Horn sound! Is it possible to put the other movement also on the web? Would love to hear the complete symphony!
In 1977 (of 1978?) I heard the Staatskapelle (and Mr. Damm as principal Horn) with Bruckner 4 in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam: this performance remained one of my most precious musical memories ever since

Thank you for your upload.
I enjoyed this live concert at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Hall as an audience when I was a student. I remember we gave a great applause to Peter Damm for his incredible performance.
