hey when i open a file or a pic the color swatches changes color to gray and when i try to change the color it still stays gray why is tht?

hmm.. try this.. go to File -> New. and look what is the Color mode. it should be RGB color. but it sounds like yours is on grayscale. if its not.. then i don't know..
