I believe you can plug directly into it. However, I usually just use the internal microphones.

so does the h4n have the best quality out of things like the h4 and h2?

I have not played the other Zoom recorders, but the H4N sounds amazing. I use it all the time.

I'm not sure of the exact model. Some high end Panasonic HD Camera. It was shot by a friend of mine who has since moved away.
