Yair Avidor plays an un- measured prelude by the French baroque composer Charles Mouton. Played on an 11 course lute after Frei by Paul Thomson. http://www.lutenist.co.uk
@nivalen What you're hearing is correct, because the bass strings are tuned in octaves. The bass strings of the lute are played with rest-strokes, and the treble strings are played free-stroke (sort of the opposite to classical guitar), so you're hearing the bass notes an octave apart.
Beautiful and inspiring performance of this little gem by Mouton. I've always wondered how to play those small tablature letters in the legato bass, but it seems to me you play first the lowest string and then the octave, am I wrong? It sounds great!
