Written by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1939 upon the death of first his wife and baby daughter during childbirth. From that time forward, he dedicated himself to writing gospel songs. Mainstream today is Lady Gaga while in his time, there were real artists in the mainstream (Elvis, for one). People like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, they all became legends. Come 2030, and nobody will remember Lady Gaga.
