Shooting big bore dangerous game cartridges like the .458 Lott at the bench is no picnic when you don't have a lead sled. When shooting offhand, you can absorb most of the recoil with your leg and back muscles; but when seated at the bench it puts a real licking on your shoulder. Me? I'll pretty much always stand up to shoot rifles like this.

agreed even shooting smaller cals like 7mm rem and 300win sitting down gets pretty brutal on the shoulder after 20 rounds. all the recoil goes straight into your should with not much give. ive never shot a .458 but i could only imagine
