Priced at 148.00 EUR, the AKG Perception 220 is an outstanding microphone. A large membrane condenser microphone, the P220 incorporates a number of features and sound quality often found in much more expensive models.

Tone quality is crystal clear and highly sensitive, but a tight cardioid pattern keeps things in check, only picking up sound directly in front of the 1-inch diaphragm. The P220 features both a bass roll off switch and -20db preattenuation pad.

As a point of comparison, I've recorded the vocals from the AKG exactly as I did with the Audio Technica AT2020 microphone which I reviewed last week.

  • Hey, I have this exact same microphone with a metal pop filter as well but I don't think it sounds as good as this. How much of a difference can a preamp make? I am using an M-Audio firewire 410

  • @zaigex Well...naturally, I'd say it's because of my superawesome voice. ;) But in all seriousness...that's most probably exactly what you're hearing - the difference between no tube preamp, and a tube preamp.

  • One more question. What cord do you have to buy for the p220 to connect it to an interface?

  • @ltunit A standard XLR cable runs from the mic to the interface.

  • Hey i got a question. I used the at2020 usb and found latency problems. If I purchase this p220 along with an m-audio fast track pro interface that has zero latency monitering, do you think the results will be tack on. I mean will it be near zero latency. I do a lot of vocal recording and singing and I just can't have latency while I listen to my headphone and sing. Please help. Thanks. Oh yeah I use a i7 laptop with 4gb of ram and I have all the latest driver. I use mixcraft 5 pro to record.

  • @ltunit Phew. An interesting question for sure. As I've not used the USB version of this mic, I'm not really familiar with the ins and outs. However, I do believe there's merit in "outsourcing" your sound processing to an external card.

  • Nice video. The sound of your mic is awesome. I have the AKG Perception 200, which essentially is the same mic. It's the only condenser mic I've ever owned, so I never had anything to compare it to. But I guess I got lucky and picked a good one.

  • Hi there, what kind of pop filter is that? I am really interested in getting one like that. How much did you pay for it and where can I get it? Or maybe just giving me the brand name and model number will help me find it online. Cheers!

  • What software should i use that's cheap or free so i can record my acoustic guitar and me singing? And by the way when i plug it all in with my audio interface my headphones stop projecting sound, when i unplug the audio interface it comes back, any help dude? <3 PLEASE REPLY

  • @DTinVienna haha. Is your room acoustically treated? So in your video, you ARE using a tube preamp?

  • @ltunit It has nothing to do with the mic. It depends on your computer capabilities, as well as software. I have the same problem. I used FruityLoops 9 at the time, but you'd want the Asio4all driver (if Mixcraft supports it), run the signal through the driver, and have the driver open in your program. It doesn't make sense, but that's what I made of it. It worked for me for a little while. FL is ridiculously complicated.
