My Uncle is the former CO of this ship 2000-2002. Thought I'd look it up just to get a visual, but didn't expect this! Sorry she had to go.

@chardtomp yea sadly. They sank her in November 2003. I left for the Monterey that October. That's when I came to understand what people meant when they said "The grass ain't always greener on the other side." LOL

Damn. I'ma miss the good old destoyers. USS Deyo is the best ship I've served on. It will be missed.

Chief Tiff, this is Senior Chief Walker served aboard Fletcher 1981-1985. Kudos to our ally in the world but if I had been onboard the ship in full operation, Your sub would have been visiting Davy Jones Locker. STGCS(SW) C. E Walker USN ret. USS Fletcher Top ASW ship in the Pacific Fleet 1983-85.

My American friends, you're probably going to dislike me for this, I was the Chief Tiff (A-Ganger) onboard HMAS WALLER that removed the safety screw of the torpedo prior to loading it into the tube to do this.
But I tell you what, hearing that detonation underwater, I will never ever forget that sound, then about 5 seconds later, the next loud crack was that of the Fletcher having her back broken.
