A few days before Christmas, traveling entertainer Marc Stevens is stuck at nightfall in a remote wood in the swampy Hautes Fagnes region of Liège, his van conked out. An odd chap who's looking for a lost dog leads Marc to a shuttered inn; the owner gives Marc a room for the night. Next day, the innkeeper, Mr. Bartel, promises to fix the van, demands that Marc not visit the nearby village, and goes through Marc's things while the entertainer takes a walk. At dinner that night, Bartel laments his wife's having left him, and by next day, Marc is in a nightmare that may not end.

mind, but you can't because it keeps coming back in flashbacks. Without giving too much away - but to warn you because, as I said, I wish I hadn't watched it - the movie has some disturbing scenes of animal abuse that are hard to forget. A pig squealing in pain is one of those sounds that you don't want repeating in your head, as is my unfortunate situation right now. Watch at your own risk. It's a good horror film, in the spirit of stuff that came out in the 70's, but it stays with you.

Be forewarned - this movie is old school creepy and it's very effective. I just watched it and wish I hadn't. I've seen Japanese, Korean, Italian, and American horror, but never Belgian. I fully expected this to be sissy-ish and amateurish with a happy ending. Not the case at all. This movie combines themes from Misery, Psycho, Deliverance, and a bit of Texas Chainsaw Massacre to create a very creepy, atmospheric, disturbing experience. This is the kind of film you try to put out of your
