Steven Stoft says:
Why you'll love Hansen's book if you're scientific:
Unlike huge climate models, Hansen's Paleoclimate science is understandable. Here are two crucial parts, but you'll need the book to really understand them.
1. How the ice-age cycles work:
a) They are not caused by CO2. That only makes the temperature change about twice as much.
b) They are caused by variations in "astronomy," the earths orbit and axis. But these do not change temperature directly.
c) The "astronomy" makes summer cooler and winter warmer in the ice age -- so less ice melts in summer and more snow falls in winter -- so the ice builds up.
d) When the "astronomy" reverses (it goes in cycles) and starts melting the ice, less sunlight is reflected by ice and the Earth warms.
e) When Earth warms, more CO2 is released from the oceans and this increases the warming.

2. How much does CO2 warm the earth (what is the climate sensitivity) ?
a) The direct effect of the reduced ice from the depth of the ice age until now is an extra 3.5 Watts of captured sunlight per square meter.
b) The direct effect of the extra CO2 is an extra 3 Watts of captured sunlight (climate forcing).
c) Together, these warmed the Earth 5 degrees C. So 5/(3+3.5) means about 3/4 of a degree of warming per Watt/m^2.
d) Doubling CO2 would cause 4 Watts of forcing so 4 x 3/4 = 3 degrees C of warming.
e) This logic involves positive feedbacks (amplifications) caused by water vapor etc. and it only works if the amplification is the same for albedo (ice reflection) forcing and for GHG (CO2) forcing. But the amplification works almost entirely through average temperature, so these are essentially the same.

The graphs in the book offer astounding proof that the paleoscience data is accurate because it hangs together in ways that could not happen by chance.
Bottom line. If you like science, this is the book for you. (But you will have to pull the pieces together. They are a bit spread out.)
Two other books that really explain things: (#1 for economics) Carbonomics: How to Fix the Climate and Charge It to OPEC and (#2 for alternative energy sources) Sustainable Energy - Without the Hot Air.

  • If this is the worlds foremost climatologist God help us. I hope he has heard of The Icehouse Effect. The public ae not as dumb as he thinks they are.

  • @david222444

"In fact, confirmation of the "icehouse effect" hypothesis would substantially strengthen the argument that there is a detectable human influence on today's climate.

"The public ae not as dumb as he thinks they are."

yeah sure, lol - especially those ideological science-denier guys listening to john coleman, charlton heston, goodfrey bloom or "lord" monkey.. are not dumb.. no no... lol

  • @aerobique Do the calculations include a Grand Solar Minimum ? I hear NASA is corrupting sunspot data. The public will find out this winter that the globe is in favct cooling abruptly. Mother nature is fucking the greenhouse theory bigtime.

  • @david222444

"i hear nasa is corrupting sunspot data"

    lol, you are cute

btw, i hear that that there are misterious people that swallow every ridiculous lie in order to support their strong believes

    here, catch a cookie *

  • @aerobique lol you are an idiot. Enjoy your global warming dream. Meanwhile every level of the atmosphere cools as the Sun enters a grand minimum. Look forward to cooling for the next few decades. Only fools still think its warming. I include you in this category.

"Only fools still think its warming."

Its a fact, bird. Records year for year- obvious trends. Clear numbers, dude. No matter where. Its -not- a theoretical concept like your prophets suggest, you know. Its reality. Based on factual measurements- from simple thermometers- to hi tech satellites - or recognizable with the naked eye. Only reality-deniers of the worst sort still push the old fossil fuel PR lies. I include you in this category.

  • Global warming in short:

    1degree celsius is "bad"

    2° are "VERY BAD"

    3°-4° will be "BIBLICAL"

    5° "is anyone here?.."

    6° ~silence~

  • But Mr Hansen, the main problem with your argument is you talk too much sense.

People love to be shafted by 'right wing' government that tells them the reason they're about to face austerity is because of the 'lefts' inability to regulate banks that they never wanted regulating in the first place.

People at large insist its better to take it up the arse from people they know than kiss a stranger they don't.

This isn't the Age of Stupid. It's the Age of Cowardice.

  • @mphello - Idiocracy is about now, not the future. it's already like that - the tarded medicine that knows nothing of how humans really work, the landfills and trash mountains, growing plants with chemicals to feed them, people being immensely dumberer by the day....

  • @JustSomePerson888

I LOVE that movie Idiocracy! :)

Thank you for mentioning it! :)

  • @JustSomePerson888 Amen! Agreed!

  • @TheElasticJesus - 'People at large insist its better to take it up the arse from people they know than kiss a stranger they don't.'

that is correct that's exactly what they are like

  • @mphello - well at least you hate nukes and know nuke power is stupid. and you make a good point, because people do have kids while knowing there's too many people.

more to the point though - there's too many of certain types of people, is more the problem, as if everyone reproducing was ecologically responsible then their children would be too, so no problems then. see the start of Idiocracy for example. most overpopulation is from stupid ignorant selfish irresponsible scumbags.

  • @david222444 - 'The public ae not as dumb as he thinks they are'

oh yes you are. you're the same 'public' that rank and file did what the evil money scum told you, and built the urban hell worlds and the urbanisation all over the world, who go along with going off the land to work in factories and work for all the evil types of industry (eg intensive farming, logging, roads, building) not the good ones ever etc. you couldn't be any stupider if you tried your hardest.

    k.y.

  • Great video! Dr James Hansen is awesome for his fight against the fossil fuel industries, but he IS a hypocrite for reproducing himself in this overpopulated planet. And, he is ignorant on nuclear power. He advocates nuclear power. He is unaware of the Second Law of Thermodynamics which makes nuclear power not worth the cost - even if there were never another dangerous meltdown ever.

  • @aerobique Not any longer! I think I may have metioned before that the Grand Solar Maximum causd the past warming. We are now entering a Grand Solar Minimum so you can forget about warming from now on. The Satellite data I am reading indicates cooling at every level of the atmosphere. Every Ocean has now entered a cooling cycle. Remember co2 is essential to life on the planet, it is not a pollutant and was the result and not the cause of warming.
