This model attempts to illustrate a characteristic of an automotive "open" differential, where if one axle is stationary (blue gear), the other axle (red gear and wheel) then rotates at twice the road speed indicated on the transmission-driven speedometer. For convenience, the dark gray pinion gear represents a 4.0:1 final drive ratio. The red indexing spheres on the ring gear and wheel are provided to count rotations.
The ring gear in this model always rotates at 1 revolution per 8 seconds. For the first 8 seconds, the model represents straight travel, with each roadwheel rotating 1:1 with the ring gear. Note that the green "planet" gear does not rotate about its own axis during this period, but simply revolves with the left (blue) and right (red) axles.
During the next 8 second period, the left axle stops rotating, and the right axle and roadwheel rotate at twice the rate of the ring gear.
(The animation was created using the open-source Blender application.)
