In a case argued by Cardozo Law Prof. Dan Ravicher, a federal district court judge ruled that two genes strongly associated with breast and ovarian cancer were products of nature and therefore could not be patented. If upheld, the landmark decision could throw into doubt the patents covering some 2,000 genes and reshape the laws of intellectual property.
