Did the spike in gas prices burst the housing bubble?

I always wondered why people are driving 100km each day to their offices, when most of them could do home-work. The suburb-concept is not existing where I live. I've got 6 grocery stores, 3 underground stations, 4 bus lines, 5 restaurants and a couple of tramway stations within a distance of two minutes walking. To me that is what I'm expecting when I live in a city. Even company buildings are closely located to mass transportation because that makes the wages for the workers actually bigger.

What we need to see is gun laws where more responsible people are allowed to carry. Reason no one wants to take the mass transit is the bangers have the advantage they have numbers and weapons. I hate to drive a car I live in a place now that is 6 miles from the nearest walmart and it is suicide to try to ride a bike there you will be run over walking is no better either there is no place to walk either I hate that but my place cost me 32K thats it I figure cars will run outta fuel GO BIKE.

Suburbia is not doomed it can be somewhat sustained with a light rail system that can easily be installed ontop the blacktop. I liked it when I lived in the city of LA but the gangs there make it impossible to raise children so folks are going to take it to the streets that is the entire reason for the exodus from the cities people have offspring. Sadly if you don't spend the required time with them the offspring start suburban gangs.

I know everyone likes to bag suburbia but has anyone thought about WHY the phenomenon occured?
Living in compact cities drives up land values making home ownership near impossible for the vast majority of the people. Can you imagine not even remotly having a chance of owning property? Even if you were in an above average income job... You would spend your life paying rent.. the development of the car overcame this problem and it is now possible for everyone to own a home.

I do believe that gas prices had an effect on home prices, but when home prices were INCREASING in the early 2000s, the suburban areas jumped faster than the inner cities.
Gas prices is probably one reason, but not the major reason.
