im working on a laptop as well and i want to start recording good sound. i have a cheap regular microphone. but whenever i record i get alot of hissing/static background. do i need one of those usd soundcard?

@extremebiker2005 I have noticed some laptopshave a tendency to put out a lot of noise as far as the fans for some people.
You may want to borrow other mics and cables/adapters and see if they put out the same noise. If different mics an cables don't solve the problem then its either the hardware or software within the laptop. I would google the model of your laptop and words like "mic hissing" or similar to see if other people have solved the problem already. Possibly with driver updates.

OOO Branson thats pretty cool. Do you have any advice regarding sound if you like recording on set not vlogging. I mean like if you're recording a film with your friends how would I have good sound on that?

@Hilldebrand Wll try to get a directional mic. Meaning it doesn't hear much except for what is right in front of it. Then make up a boom pole so you can hang it over the heads of the people in the shot. A piece of aluminum tubing should work. The kind you use to put up a TV antenna. Wrap the part you are going to hold with foam like insulation for a hot water pipe an maybe some duct tape. This keeps the sound of your hands from traveling up the pole to the mic.
Write me if you need more.
