I think this was done very seriously, except for one riff done by a backup singer. You might listen to the cd version, it's much more plainitive! I've heard the Donegan version, and it's good, but the cd version of this by Lyle is from the gut...

I like it, but prefer the more serious version by Lonnie Donegan who sang more in the Ledbelly style

@scottay69 yeah, saw him here again on the 22nd. But the idiots at the venue unplugged the amps at 10:30 just at the fiddle solo start ! But the band went on with the song and the crowd got SO quiet, pros do that kinda stuff I guess !
