    Omar, rise over run is correct because the span is the total width of the building and run is half of the span. Run relates to the horizontal distance that the rafter pitches up. You can't use the total span to figure the rafter length unless it is a shed roof. Your typical roof pitches up for half the span on each side and meets at the center.

    Great Video!!! How did you determine your first cut on your rafter though? You began measuring off an angled cut for your rafters length! How'd you get that?

    You just mark the pitch that you have decided to go with using a square and cut it. If you use a speed square like the one in the video you will use the row that says "Common Rafter" not the "Hip Valley" scale.
