The Women's Foundation conducts research into the state of girls and women in Colorado and uses this research to educate the stakeholders in women's issues in Colorado. The foundation also works to effect public policy reform to increase self sufficiency in women. The foundation supports nonprofits working directly with women and girls with grants. To accomplish all this, the Women's Foundation of Colorado will raise over 1.4 million dollars in 2011.
The keynote speaker, Martina Navratilova, talked about her childhood in Czechoslovakia, her defection to the United States and obtaining US citizenship, her coming out in the early 1980s, her recent cancer diagnosis and climbing Mount Kilamanjaro, where she succumbed to a severe case of pulmonary edema. Of course running through her life was her tennis career. Martina has faced obstacle after obstacle with integrity and boldness. Her story inspired those in the audience.
