ECC is a red herring.
The issues people associate with ECC are actually caused by using Registered memory. Many modules are both Registered and ECC, but some are Unbuffered ECC.
ECC isn't the issue, it's whether the memory is Registered or Unbuffered that causes most compatibility problems.
A few picky BIOSes will refuse to use Unbuffered ECC, but that's rare.
