Privacy and protection for consumer rights is at the forefront of concerns relating to the implementation of electronic health records. Privacy, confidentiality, discrimination and appropriate use of data are points of discussion surrounding the concerns of implementing health IT. Alison Rein, Assistant Director for Food and Health Policy at the National Consumer League, a leading consumer rights group, offers an actual example of a woman who was afforded no protection under the law when the entirety of her medical record was shared with another institution.
