I bought it too in the '80's on cassette tape , and used to listen to it on my Sony Walkman.

@Parmenides320 - I recently heard an interview with George Fenton on BBC's Desert Island Discs, in which he claims to have actually sung on this - or rather 'mumbled' as he put it :-))

When Mr Mandela looks at what his ppl are doing to S Africa with all the open theft and corruption in government, then he must be so sad. Certainly not worth having spent a day in prison for, let alone all those long, lonely years. Eish. A tragedy. This is not what the fight was for.

@germainekos - I have just listened to a radio interview with George Fenton (that's why I'm looking him up - I hadn't heard of him before) and he said that he did actually sing on this himself - or rather he 'mumbled', as he put it :-)

This is just great... emotional and moving - as the movie was. Have it on DVD. I would like to understand the African words in it...

Hi, The powerful singing at the end of the song is Jonas Gwangwa singing I think, the great South African Tombone player. I am not sure of the singing at the beggining. I dont think it is Fenton, but could be wrong. Many years ago as a young 23 to 26 year old I had the great privalige of managing Jonas and many other South Africans in exile from apartheid in London, a blessing I treasure for ever!
is that Fenton singing?

@pixarpianofreak No idea. All I know is what it says on the album (Shebeen/George Fenton/Jonas Gwagwa) and the Oscar nomination (Best Music: Original Song: George Fenton, Jonas Gwangwa). Anyone know???

I WISH I could find a video of this song being performed at the Academy Awards. I've never seen anything like it. I recall when the song finished there was a full second or two of absolute silence then the entire audience rose to its feet in thunderous applause.
