360 degree reflecting ray-traced model of the 2-seater Verticopter. http://tinyurl.com/Verticopter Modeled in Blender by Daniel Klaue. Available as an X-plane model in 5 scale sizes for X-plane. www.verticopter.com.

The key to this design is the simple prop swivel mechanism, in which the props eliminate torque by counter-rotating. Wireframe view shows gears and shafts, driving the props from the turboshaft engines housed in the nacelles on top of the wings.

The gears closest to the props are interlocked, so if one prop spins, the other one will always spin in the opposite direction, eliminating torque. If one engine fails, it is automatically disengaged by a free-wheel mechanism.

  • that surely took like 20 decades to render

  • It took about 3 days to render a full 360 degree spin for each paint scheme. That's about 10 days in total, before I merged them together into one 360 degree rotation.
