I wouldn't say it was nothing like his other films. Other than the graphic scenes it had all of the same themes found in all of his other works. But yeah, they were bound by their agreement to release it here. But they did originally think that it was going to be a lighthearted movie about a beautiful princess who harmonized with cute animals (seriously). But of course they were soon proven wrong. I don't care if it had trouble finding an audience, I'm just glad they brought it over at all.

Disney actually was hesitant about distributing MONONOKE here, period. After all it was obviously nothing like Miyazaki's other films. But it was fan campaigns that compelled them to do so, plus it was Miyazaki's biggest movie at the time the deal between Disney and Ghibli was cut (1997). So it was more of a contract agreement. But either way, MONONOKE would have had trouble finding an audience.

Yup, why does everything in film have to be logical anymore? Can we not just watch movies to escape reality? Isn't that what we used to do? Ponyo was intentionally created for five year olds, and as such it is told like a five year old would tell it. It's just pure and harmless fun, and there's nothing wrong with that.
