This is the first time for the TV spot on refugee issue in Thailand. USCRI and BLF had created this spot to educate and promote the public in Refugee issue and propose the constructive solution under the concept of providing the opportunity toward refugees to become progressively less reliant on State aid or humanitarian assistance, attaining a growing degree of self-reliance and becoming able to pursue sustainable livelihoods such as rights to work, freedom of movement and other fundamental rights, equally contributing to the economic development of the host country(แปลจาก "Warehousing Refugees: A Denial of Rights, a Waste of Humanity," World Refugee Survey 2004 (USCRI-Washington D.C.: Washington D.C., 2004), pp. 38-56)
Now, Thailand hosts around 406,000 refugees and asylum seekers (World Refugee Survey 2008) for decades. About 150,000 of them have been residing in temporary shelters or camps along Thai-Myanmar border. Although Thailand has not ratified the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, Thai government has provided fundamental supports such as basic education and identification card under the displaced person status to refugee.
