Oil is an expensive resource that is rapidly becoming harder to find. Eventually, we are going to have to find a new renewable fuel source to replace it. These scientists think they already have—algae.

  • Hurr durr, get the fuck out. You inbred retards can't even begin to comprehend this.

  • The best, yet possibly the most paradoxical thing about using algae to produce biofuels, is that the algae used to make them use the carbon dioxide produced by combustion to grow and produce more carbohydrates and lipids, substances that can be used as biofuels. It is by use of energy that more may be produced.

  • People need to understand that we dont need oil, we need alternatives, to the combustion engine for starters, sure we need a transition fuel, and this might be one of them them, but we need something truly green for the long term.

  • See HtK7REGOJM4 For Commercial Algae Production

  • What is the purpose of those machines that are swirling the flasks around?

  • Brilliant, but when it said Exxon invested in it, now it sounds predictably bad. I'm sure Exxon oil will invest in this so they'll still have their profits and overprice this wonderful technology when it's ready to sell.

  • lol my classmate said

    Al becomes gae(gay)

  • i still dont get it,even if we use ethanol with fuel to reduce the amount of pollution,ur still gonna use all the petrolium you have right?,i mean....it still wont make such a diffirence

  • @tigersire you are partially correct. Yes the environment will stabilize, but will it stabilize at a point at which the environment is still a habitable one for 7+ billion humans? CO2 levels have never been so high in researched climate history, which is longer than humans ever existed. So the climate situation is very unique and that will have dire consequences if we don't stop putting more CO2 into our atmosphere.

  • Literally 'Green' Energy

  • @MedicalChew Okay you seem like a smart enough commenter. The "fossil fuels" we use IS decayed animal and plant material, so by burning it we are releasing the chemicals back into the environment to be used by future generations. I understand that we need to start looking for alternative fuel resources, but we should change to electric, while releasing these chemicals back into the biosphere for healthier more nutritious plant life.

  • @HappyGilmoreFTW as it stands it is. only 50% or less of the biomass is oil. carbon is also in the algae meal left over at the end. if this is not burned it can be buried to lock the CO2 in strata
