Drag hunting is the humane alternative to hunting with hounds. Instead of chasing a live animal, the pack of hounds follow a scent laid along the ground by members of the hunt.

Some draghunts use a cloth soaked in aniseed, animal urine and paraffin and this is dragged across the countryside before the start of the "hunt".

Draghunts which use bloodhounds simply follow the scent of a human on foot.

There are several drag hunts operating in Ireland at present. Drag hunting is also sometimes practised by existing foxhunting groups - either as a way to exercise the hounds or in addition to their blood sport activities.

The same hounds are used in both, proving that the transition from cruelty to compassion, which most Irish citizens desire, is very simple to arrange. Drag hunting is the future for hunting in Ireland.

  • I love drag hunting.

I would never go hunting when it was the way it used to be.

    Thankyou for posting this.

It will show that there is as much 'fun' involved in dragging than in actually seeing a fox slaughtered.

  • BRILLIANT! This method restores dignity to the hunt. The horses are run, the hounds are fulfilled, and everyone has a splendid time. It is rather amusing how defensive others become when their activities are proven obsolete, unnecessary, and savage. Remember: the root word of "ignorant" is "ignore." Having been made aware of something, posessing that knowledge, and then ignoring it is truly "ignorance." My hounds are perfectly content tracking whatever scent they're given. Thank you for sharing!

  • The funny thing is, in drag hunting, you're not actually hunting anything.

  • I hunt birds with a pointing dog. I do the killing most of the time. But when a bird is injured, it is more humane for my dog to track it down and kill it than for me to go busting through the brush trying to find it. I guess I am glad I live in the USA where we are still free to hunt without the moral police breathing down our backs.

If you don't like hunting with hounds, don't participate.

  • If the organisation that posted this video want to be politically correct, then they need to get their facts correct. Drag hunts do not use Bloodhounds, drag hunts use fox hounds to hunt a "dragged" chemical scent, hence the term "drag hunting". Bloodhounds hunt the natural scent of man, this is called hunting "The Clean Boot". the two are not the same and should never be confused. May be ICABS need educating about hound types and what they hunt before posting incorrect information.

  • Looks great fun! i love the idea!

id love to take murphy x

  • I love drag hunting but the hounds should be infront of the horses not amongst them!!

  • This is brilliant. The thrill and excitement without the violence, i want a go!

  • sorry i apologise for my last comment i commented on the wrong one but i am so glad you are trying to stop hunting well done 8)

  • This is the only acceptable alternative to hunting with hounds: The horses and doggies get their outings, the people enjoy the ride and the beauty of the countryside - and at the end of a good afternoon out - no animal is tormented and killed ! Those who do not want or support this humane alternative can only be lovers of blood, torture and death, and sadly there are too many of those sorts still around ! :(
