Yeah, I think he was disappointed in their intelligence because they were all taking him literally. This is why English actors' interviews with english hosts are so much better... more room for witty banter!

hahaha he has just mocked them them for 7 and a half minutes and they didn't realise! his personal life is not what he feels comfortable talking about and that is all they've tried to find out.. hilarious, smart and classically english!

I think he is taking the piss... If you listen to the interview more carefully, most of the interviewers didn't ask any questions related to his film. They just asked him personal questions for rating's sake regardless how he feels. But one can argue that he should have handled it more gently. :) He is an impatient guy, very good looking and charming. Just don't take his jokes too seriously. He is nice to people who are nice to him. He didn't give a hard time to Liza. Didn't he?

Perhaps Barbara should not be quoating what she discussed with Hugh upstairs before the show.
I don't necessarily agree that the bottom line here is that Americans don't understand British humor. It's obvious from the start that Hugh doesn't feel like he needs to be nice to four loud and not very attractive women and I think that's totally fine. I find them rather ennoying myself. But I've watched other interviews and saw very good dynamics between him and his American interviewers.
