Laying out my case for why I feel the recent ban on burqas in France is wrong.

Side note: If anyone uses AVS video editor, tips on how to improve my editing would be appreciated. This is the first time I've used the screen capture feature.

  • @ShiobanGuy You're thinking of the ban on religious symbols in schools. That ban is includes veils, crosses, etc. and has been around for years. Here, Chris is talking about something different. Namely, he's speaking about the ban on face-coverings which only just came into effect.

  • Also, they are still allowed to wear these coverings at home or in their places of worship - just not in public. I'm not completely for the ban - I definitely think there are issues with telling women what to wear - but I don't think it's as simple as you say here. I also think that if Christians were trying to get "their women" to wear full face coverings in public, we'd be crying that it's misogyny. Why isn't this the case when it's Muslim women?

  • Okay, but the ban only speaks about full face coverings, not head-scarfs or other forms of hijab. Most Muslims don't wear full face coverings, and think they are oppressive. Also, the way the penalties are set up support the autonomy of women - while the fine for covering your face is 150 euros, the punishment for forcing someone to cover their face is 30000 euros and up to one year in jail. To me, that makes clear what the problem is.

  • It is just not the Burqa, it is all religious icons.

I do agree that this is not the governments role to decide such things but wanted to point out that it involves the wearing of any religious item, which you did not point out in the video and could leave people thinking it was a law directed only to followers of the Muslim faith.

  • I'm pretty fucking close to moving to france and buying a burqa just to fight back at this shit.
